Our Story

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss

Have you ever heard the phrase “leaders are readers”?  People who read more are often seen as leaders due to their vast knowledge.  Reading helps you learn new things, takes you to places you may not have physically visited.  Reading opens your knowledge of other cultures, sea life and does something magical to you.

Mercy (Ellen) Eduwa Badger had a deep love for learning and exposure.  It was her wish that every child gets the opportunity to get a decent education.  Growing up as one of 15 children of the Crentsil clan, she had a father who was a big advocate for education and made sure he stressed the importance of education to all his children.  As a young child, Eduwa was known for her commitment to hardwork - a story was told of her insisting on taking her Common Entrance Examination although she was seriously ill and could barely sit up to take the exams.  She went on to pass the exams and move on to Secondary School.  Her life was influenced by so many people and so as an adult, she strongly believed in the statement "it takes a village".  Just as she was supported and influenced by so many, she felt it was her duty to pass it on to others.  Although she wasn't wealthy, she took advantage of every opportunity to help in any way she could.  Although she had four biological children, she had scores of "adopted" children.  She supported numerous children in diverse ways – paying school fees, buying books, paying for school uniforms, buying their first laptop, paying for vocational training, etc.  She was first to advise on the importance of education.  She valued literacy.  She knew that when children read, they transform themselves, they are able to communicate better, and it opens up “a new world” to them.  Children are transformed creatively when they read.

This foundation was set up as a legacy that will serve a whole community.  A legacy that will transform lives.   This foundation seeks to support youth development through reading, providing scholarships, internships, educational resources and vocational training.  Our vision is to build a community that encourages the youth to enjoy reading and aspire to be leaders.
